Sigma Sport - Specialized

Another Tour of Britain debutant, Sigma Sport – Specialized stepped up to the UCI Continental level this season allowing sponsor Sigma Sport to achieve their long held dream of riding The Tour of Britain.

Like the team, many of the riders will be making their Tour debut, though Tom Murray, Simon Richardson and Stephen Gallagher have all ridden The Tour of Britain before. The latter two have both won the FDB Ras stage race in Ireland, so should be Sigma’s best bet of a good overall result, with Richardson sure to be keen to impress on Stage Five that finishes in Glastonbury, not far from his hometown of Shepton Mallet.

Team boss Matt Stephens has plenty of stage racing experience, having ridden the Giro d’Italia in 2000 and finished in the top ten of both the Tour of Langkawi and the Tour Down Under in the same year. Stephens though last rode a major stage race in Britain back in 1999, when he finished 15th overall in the Prutour riding for the Harrods – Sixt team. Coincidentally that was the last time that Swansea’s Constitution Hill featured on the route of a stage race too, with Matt claiming 12th on the stage.

Other likely riders include powerful Dutchman Wouter Sybrandy and former mountain biker Gareth Montgomerie, who impressed on the cobbled climb at Durham during The Halfords Tour Series.
